Providence College Athletics Director Steve Napolillo announced the hiring of Kelsey Christensen as the program’s 12th head softball coach on June 27, 2023.

Christensen spent the previous two seasons at Providence College as an assistant coach / pitching coach, while also serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. During that time, she assisted with all of the day-to-day operations of the program, including practice planning, scheduling, team development strategies, fundraising, alumni relations and community outreach.

Prior to her arrival at Providence College, she spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Holy Cross (2019-21). During her time with the Crusaders, Christensen coached pitcher Kelly Nelson to the career strikeout record (603) and single season strikeout record in 2019 (208) along with a 1.84 ERA in 2021.

Christensen developed and implemented a velocity training program and oversaw all arm-health related matters for the pitching staff, which included pre/post-throw requirements to ensure the health and longevity of pitching arms throughout the entire development process.

Christensen was also instrumental in team development, having worked directly with player leadership to enhance and sustain a culture of excellence on and off the field.

Prior to Holy Cross, Christensen served as a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan State for two seasons (2017-18). She helped the Spartans advance to the Big Ten Semifinals in back-to-back seasons (2017, 2018). At Michigan State, Christensen worked with the pitchers and served as first base coach.

A four-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection, Christensen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and philosophy from Holy Cross in 2016. She completed her Master of Science degree in sport coaching and leadership – kinesiology from Michigan State in 2018.
